Central Asia Travel Destinations – Kazakhstan

At roughly half the size of the 48 contiguous United States, Kazakhstan is the ninth largest country in the world, with spectacularly diverse geography and no shortage of places to visit. Northern forests gradually turn into wide flat steppes to more arid regions and finally to deserts in the south. Kazakhstan is rich in minerals and has large oil and gas reserves.

Islam and Christianity are the dominant religions, although religious tolerance is the widely recognized norm and, as a holdover from the Soviet era, many people profess no religious affiliation at all. The national characteristic of the Kazakh people is hospitality. Steming from the country's longstanding nomadic culture, strangers are treated as honored guests. Respect for guests and the elderly as well as tolerance and peacefulness are ingrained from childhood.

Almaty, in the east, is the country's largest city and commercial capital. The ancestral home of the world's apples has been traced to this region. In fact, "Alma" means "apple." The Great Silk Road caravans came through this ancient city carrying spices, porcelain, silk and civilizing influences from the cultured Orient to the more barbaric west.

An over night train trip to the west takes you to the Baykonur Cosmodrome, home of the Russian space program. Once a secretly guarded location, Baykonur is now open to visitors where it is possible to tour the birthplace of space flight, visit the complex where the original cosmonauts trained and where today Russian flights to the International Space Station are launched.

About 100 miles (160 km) east of Almaty are the natural wonders of Altyn-Emel National Park. The region contains rare animals such as Siberian mountain goats, ancient Scythian burial mounds, rock drawings from 3500 years ago and the Kyzyl-Auyz Gorge where there grows the "stone tree" which has bark so hard that it resists an ax. The park also contains otherworldly "lunar" landscapes and the unforgettable "Singing Dunes," which make the sound of an organ in dry weather. Imperceptible movement of grains of sand sliding down the face of the dune in dry weather creates a vibration that becomes electrified in dry conditions, which coupled by resonant conditions in the surroundings, produces powerful sound waves that can be heard miles away.

Here too is Charyn Canyon, referred to as the younger brother of America's Grand Canyon, with deep, colorful gorges, spectacular rock formations and some of the world's finest hiking, canyoning and water rafting.

Travel Tips for Russia

Russia is becoming increasingly popular with tourists due to its rich cultural heritage and its popular cities of Moscow and Saint Petersburg. If you are planning or are going on a trip to Russia, then we suggest you consider some of the following travel tips.

Familiarise yourself with Russia

Do some reading around Russia before you visit it to find out a bit about the country. To give you some insight, Russia spans nine time zones and is the world’s largest country, with landscapes ranging from frozen tundras in Siberia and the endless wheat fields and pine forests of central Russia to the mountains and palm trees of the Caucasus in the South. The population was approximately around 140 million according to the last census with Central Russia, which includes Moscow, being the most densely populated area.

Be sure to check what to eat and what not to eat before you head to Russia. The country does not pose any serious health threats, with cases of food poisoning the most common problem. Most guidelines suggest avoiding buying kebabs at stands, especially at train stations, while tourists are also advised to be wary of dairy products. Tap water is safe to drink in Moscow after boiling, but tourists are advised to drink bottled water everywhere else; avoiding ice cubes and using bottled water to brush teeth is also recommended.

Russia is a spectacular country and so are its prices. The large cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg are, like most famous European cities, very expensive. On the outskirts of the larger cities you will find cheaper restaurants and accommodation. Holidaymakers are advised to get their Russian Rubles before travelling, but there are ATMs from local banks like Sberbank and international ones such as HSBC and Citibank all over Moscow, St. Petersburg and other Russian cities. When paying for something, retailers in Russia prefer to be paid in cash, but credit cards are generally accepted and travellers can still pay with traveller’s cheques.

Before jetting off to Russia you should be aware of some Russian etiquette. If you are on a business trip and are running late, there is no need to panic as this is considered normal, often due to the awful traffic in Moscow. If you are offered a drink, it is considered rude not to accept it, especially for men. Some travel guides also say that Russian men often only shake hands with a fellow male upon meeting, so women travelling with their husbands should be prepared to see that their husband’s hand is shaken and not theirs. Russians also like to dress up almost everywhere they go, so it might be worth packing some smart clothes for your trip.

Choosing a Costa Rica Jungle Lodge

Costa Rica's beach resorts and hotels receive a lot of well deserved attention among North American sun and surf worshipers. With white and dark sand beaches, great waves and romantic sunsets – it's hard to go wrong. But for those tired of the salt-crusted-hair-look, who prefer something a bit more adventurous and off the beaten path, Costa Rica offers a delightful alternative: The jungle / rainforest lodge. Located in misty cloud forests, lowland jungles and remote beaches, the jungle lodge is everything a beach resort is not: intimate, secluded, bathed in nature and refreshingly authentic.

Imagine white water rafting down one of the world's most scenic rivers to a palm-thatched paradise offering gourmet meals and unique nature tours. How about flying to one of Costa Rica's remote jungles and then taking a small boat down a jungle-laden river straight out into the ocean and then on to your very romantic getaway. Maybe an emerald-green cloud forest with myriad tropical birds and a cool moist breeze is really what you're looking for? You can find this and much more at one of Costa Rica's eclectic mix of jungle lodges.

Visa or MasterCard

Because many lodges are located in fairly remote areas of the country, most supplies must be bought in from a good distance away (many times by raft, boat or plane), making the price you pay for a quality lodge somewhat more expensive than a regular hotel – though not necessarily as much as a beach resort. Still, when you consider that many rainforest lodges include meals, transportation and some tours in the price, it really is a great bargain. Lodges on the lower end of the price spectrum may cost anywhere from $ 70 – $ 125 dollars per person per night. Expect to pay anywhere from $ 150 – $ 350 per person, per night for high-end lodges. Most lodges can be paid for beforehand over the internet, so you should not need to take much cash to the lodge itself. Some lodges also require a minimum stay, so make sure to call and find out.

It's a jungle out there …

Before you go, make sure you know what you are getting into – literally. Although these sounds like common sense, you'd be surprised how many people blindly book their vacation through a third party and then are surprised (to say the least) to learn that their so-called jungle lodge is either a lodge, nor in the jungle. Or maybe they expected some vibrant nightlife but are surprised to learn that it is the six legged type. If the sight of a creepy crawly sends you in search of a shot gun, then maybe you should stick with the Marriott. So make sure you give the lodge a call (if possible), or at least visit their website. Ask questions. Are bugs included in the price? Or are they extra? I meant good questions. Is food included in the price? What kind of food is served? Is there electricity? Is there a naturalist guide at the lodge? Are tours included? What is your children policy? The more you know, the better prepared you will be to enjoy yourself.

Responsible Tourism

The great majority of jungle lodges are built to, and upheld, strict standards of eco-responsibility. These may include materials used, waste management, the use of renewable resources, and the way they educate their guests to respect the environment. Many rainforest lodges are also very involved with local communities, donating resources, money and time to projects that benefit the area's residents. Some lodges may offer guided cultural tours, allowing you to enjoy a much more satisfying experience rather simply participating in recreational and nature activities. That said, because of the boom in everything "eco", there are some "lodges" that have simply added this prefix to their name and nothing more. They talk the talk but do not walk the walk. So again, if a true eco-lodge is what you are looking for, ask the right questions. What concrete steps do you take to protect the environment? How do you avoid disturbing the wildlife? How do you minimize energy consumption? Do you support local communities? Are you members of any eco-tourism organizations and have you received any rewards for eco-responsible practices? Direct questions such as these will soon separate the wheat from the chaff.

What should I pack?

The answer to this question depends on the particular lodge you will be staying at. If easily accessible by car, then you can probably take just about anything you'd like, just make sure you get clear instructions from the lodge itself – you will not want to take a hair dryer or laptop and then find out there is no electricity. As mentioned before, some lodges are only accessible by plane or boat, and these may only allow a limited weight or luggage size. As a rule of thumb, the less you pack the better. Most quality lodges will include a list of recommended items to pack. Typically this list includes hiking boots, cotton pants (dry-out quicker and are less heavier than jeans), cotton shirts, underclothes, three or four pairs of socks, light jacket, a cap with wide brim, sun glasses, sun block, insect repellant and toiletry items. But then again, this will be determined by the lodge's location and activities available.

You are now armed with the basics for choosing the perfect jungle lodge for your needs and budget. So if the pungent aroma of three-day old suntan lotion has lost its romantic appeal, or if you simply want to enjoy nature in a much more intimate way, I highly recommend you look into visiting a jungle lodge, one of Costa Rica's more unique and enjoyable accommodation alternatives.

Reasons Why Adventure Travel Is a Good Idea for You

Adventure travel has become quite popular in the past decade. Earlier people simply went sightseeing to historical or religious places took a few pictures and came home happy. But the modern generation wants more than that. There are a number of adrenalin junkies who want to push their physical and mental limits and enjoy the thrill that comes with adventure tourism. And why not, especially since adventure tourism is actually good for you. Let us see a few of the reasons why you should opt for it.

According to modern studies conducted by scientists the modern obsession with cleanliness actually gives rise to allergies, asthma and inflammatory bowel disease. If you get dirty on the other hand it improves your immune system and makes it stronger. Going on adventures means getting dirty and this in turn improves your physical health.

Outdoor activities can prevent or treat a large number of health problems. These physical problems range from heart disease to attention deficiency disorder. Being in the outdoors and close to nature helps in preventing many ailments and cures many others. Then again there is no age limit to adventure trips. You can go on an adventure trip at any age provided you have the vigor and stamina to rough it out.

According to some research, hiking and walking make the brain grow in size. In most people the hippocampus of the brain becomes smaller in size over the age of 50 which can cause memory loss. However, it was noticed that when a group of people in this age group took forty minute walks for a year their hippocampi grew in size by about 2%. This could improve their memory retention for many years. Here if you regularly go on hiking adventures it will keep you mentally sharp and healthy.

Going on adventure increases your tolerance for uncertainty because things on an adventure trip do not always go as planned. This will teach you how to cope with uncertainties in life and there are as we know many uncertainties in an average person's life. One of the best things about adventure vacations is that you are able to shed your familiar skin for a while and explore other sides of your personality. You can pretend to be a teenager at the age of 50 and get away with it which may not be possible in your day to day life back home.

There are many other benefits of adventure travel that you can learn if you talk to people who regularly indulge in it. At the same time there are many benefits that you can learn about if you browse the internet as there are a number of articles and blogs on this category. The best thing nowdays is that you do not have to plan your adventure trip on your own, because there are a number of travel agencies that specialize in adventure tourism and they plan your trips in detail for you at a nominal fee.

Tourism Should Be the Main Industry in Ireland

The current economic crisis pertinently emphasizes the fact that we cannot rely on our industrial output to create the necessary GDP to keep Ireland afloat in what is the worst world depression in history. We are simply not competitive enough, through having too high of a cost base, to be attractive to multi-national companies. That cost base is not going to reduce quickly enough for us to participate fully in the world economy upswing when it comes about. We offer attractive low tax rates for foreign direct investment but this advantage may be eroded by the US applying a repatriation tax on overseas earnings by US companies operating in low-tax regimes like Ireland.

I welcome, therefore, the Tourism Ireland initiative recently launched for a determined 2010 marketing strategy promotion designed to restore overseas tourism to growth next year. Tourism Ireland plans to grow visitor numbers to the island of Ireland by +3% next year – attracting an additional 230,000 visitors – giving a 2010 target of 7.85 million. This outcome will mean that tourism to the island of Ireland will grow ahead of the competition.

Marketing investment will be refocused to generate immediate returns for the tourism industry. Investment will be concentrated in Britain and in Germany, based on research which identifies these markets as our best prospects. Tourism Ireland will also significantly increase its investment in promoting value offers.

I firmly believe that we do not promote Ireland enough given the unique demographics that as an island of less than 6 million people, we have a Diaspora of about 70 million people mostly concentrated in America. Tourism should be our mainstream industry and Ireland should start realizing that they need to offer value for money and when they do they will attract huge numbers to see the sights, trace their roots and spend money. It is the cheapest foreign direct investment you could possibly ask for.

At the launch, Martin Cullen TD, Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, said as much when he stated that the Government fully recognises the important role that tourism can play in contributing to the country’s economic recovery and is committed to continued investment in the sector as a priority in 2010. He identified it as a key component in realising the potential of the many millions of people who will take holidays and short breaks in 2010.

However, he needs to realize that Ireland must offer value and not give credence to the crazy notion that tourists are justifiable targets for fleecing. You will do that once only and you will never see repeat business along with suffering from word of mouth that Ireland is a rip off place to holiday We can do all the highlighting of the uniqueness of a holiday on the island of Ireland – the diversity of our culture and heritage and the friendliness of our people and differentiate ourselves in a very crowded marketplace – but we still must offer value in a new world economic order. It is the primary criteria in any holiday destination decision.

2009 has proved to be one of the toughest years for tourism to the island of Ireland and for tourism worldwide. One of the key factors affecting Ireland’s performance is its traditional reliance on Britain and North America, two markets which have suffered disproportionately from the economic downturn and weak currencies. In addition, air access worldwide declined significantly during 2009. Despite this, by year end Tourism Ireland anticipates that 7.6 million will have visited the island of Ireland from overseas, generating approximately EUR3.7 billion in revenue; and there is some evidence that consumer confidence is beginning to improve, albeit slowly, providing a positive signal for 2010.

However, I feel they are setting the bar too low and that Tourism Ireland should be initiating a 10-year plan to bring tourist revenue to EUR20 billion per annum. As tough a target as that may seem it is not outlandish given the numbers that claim Irish descent worldwide. As industrial growth diminishes, combined with our lack of natural resources, we have the opportunity to make tourism the centrepiece of our economic model. Go do it!
